Origins
The Condon line is the most diverse branch of my grandparents, with roots in Ireland, Norway, and Germany. In addition its also a very religiously diverse branch with practitioners of Catholicism and various forms of Protestantism. The four main branches of the Condon family include the Condons themselves, who were originally from County Cork, Ireland, particularly the Mitchelstown area. There is also the Steinwand family from Stuttgart, Germany, who practiced both Catholicism and Lutheranism. On my maternal side, the Braaten family hails from the Valdres region of Norway and were typically Lutheran, and the Gallaghers who came from various regions in Ireland.
Bubbles (Colleen Condon) (1940-2005)
Colleen Marie Condon or Bubbles, as she was known to her grandchildren, was a very strong-willed and independent woman. She was ahead of her time in many ways. Before 1974, women couldn’t have their own bank accounts, but once she could, she moved herself, five kids, and her husband from Minneapolis to Sanibel, Florida, where she ran five businesses over the span of 30 years. Starting in 1975 with the Salimar Hotel, then the Port of Call restaurant, then she worked for Jim’s Shell Shop, and then managed condominiums, and lastly Sanibel’s Finest, a shell shop in 1984, which she owned for 21 years until her death. For a woman born in 1940, the amount she got done within her life is remarkable and unmatched. Many women of her generation became housewives, while she worked and managed to become independent.
